ENACTUS Nationals 2018

ENACTUS, the social enterprise society at the University, competed in the UK finals supported by the employability grant. Read the interview we made with vice president Johanna and get inspired!
Hi, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am a 4th year Economics undergraduate at the University. I have been a member of the society Enactus Glasgow throughout my time at University and spent my last year studying abroad at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
Can you tell us a bit about the activity that you have been engaged in which has been supported by the CoSSEmploy Employability Award?
I was attending the Enactus UK Nationals competition in London representing the Enactus Glasgow team. Nationals is the event where all 56 participating university teams compete to represent their projects in the Enactus World Competition. Each of the projects are social enterprises and as such the competition is judged on how well teams have used entrepreneurial action to economically, socially and environmentally create positive change. Presentations consist of 17 minute presenting and 5 minutes of Q&A afterwards.
What, for you, was the highlight of your involvement in this activity?
Your answer: For me there are a number of highlights of attending Nationals. Firstly the presentation itself showcases all the work we have put into the society that year and the Q&A is always a great opportunity to answer more in-depth queries regarding the projects. Another great highlight is watching other teams present on their projects and seeing just how many other Enactus projects there are out there and getting inspired. In addition the employability fair at the Enactus Nationals competition is a fantastic opportunity to directly network with various companies such as EY, Accenture, Diageo and Amazon amongst many others.
What has been the biggest impact on your employability?
Your answer: I think that the employability fair offers students a fantastic opportunity to network and build a direct contact with some of the biggest employers in the UK and globally. In addition, as the judges are from the Enactus sponsor companies there are many potential employers who watch the presentations and therefore this offers a great chance to make a good impression with recruiters.
What advice would you have for other students considering taking part in this type of activity?
Taking part in Nationals is a great way to practise your presentation skills and build your network. I would greatly encourage students to take part in this to give them a practical experience and increase their awareness of the opportunities available to them after graduating.
